1905

Blaydon Pupil Teachers Centre opened above the Council Offices on Shibdon Road, under Miss Ashworth, with 37 pupils.

 

1908

School contines to expand and moves to the co-operative hall.

 

1912

Mr Wilson appointed headteacher from 1 January. Blaydon Secondary School opens on Shibdon Road on 12 October, charging an annual fee of £4 10s, with scholarships available.

 

1914

Outbreak of First World War. Plaque in school remembers 8 members of the school community who lost their lives in the war.

 

1934

Retirement of Mr Wilson. Mr Williams appointed as headteacher. Extensions to school buildings to deal with pupil numbers undertaken.

 

1944

School becomes the Blaydon Grammar School following the 1944 Education Act.

 

1950

Sudden death of Mr Williams leads to the appointment of Mr Lockett as headteacher

 

1964

Establishment of the Blaydon Multilateral Unit. Uniform changes to common black, replacing previous blue.

 

1966

Retirement of Mr Lockett. Mr Nattress becomes headteacher.

 

1969

Opening of new science, art, domestic science, technology and PE facilities.

 

1971

Merger with the Blaydon East Secondary School to form Blaydon Comprehensive School.

 

1974

Retirement of Mr Nattress. Mr Cowey becomes headteacher.

 

1976

Fire destroys 'temporary' buildings first erected in the 1920's.

 

1983

Gateshead Council announces plans to reorganise schools in Western Gateshead to establish a tertiary college on the Blaydon Comprehensive site. This leads to a drop in enrolment as the future of the school seems uncertain.

 

1984

Retirement of Mr Cowey. Mr Warren becomes headteacher

 

1987

75th Anniversary celebrations take place. Old Blaydonian Association re-established.

 

1996

School receives positive first inspection report; noting commitment of LEA to undertake refurbishment of the buildings.

 

1997

Retirement of Mr Warren. Mr Telford-Reed becomes headteacher. 85th Anniversary celebrations.Following the LEA decision to close the Sixth Form the school votes to "opt out" of LEA control. This application is refused by the incoming government following the General Election and the decision to close the school confirmed.

 

1998

School closes with a final enrolment of 250. The school buildings continue to be used for a further year as an "annexe" to Hookergate Comprehensive School.

 

2000

School buildings demolished. Stone re-used as part of the Gateshead Quays development
